5 Minutes With Amanda Langtree, Principal Employment Lawyer, Langtree Legal

1. What services does your business provide?

Our firm specialises in employment law and HR consulting services. We predominantly assist employers with all aspects of the employment relationship, from attraction and engagement to disciplinary matters and termination. We enjoy taking the time to learn about our client’s businesses and understanding how we can help them succeed so that we can build an ongoing relationship and build capability within the business.

Uniquely, we connect employment law and human resources in a collaborative approach, meaning that our clients receive a whole-of-business solution to workplace issues that considers both the legal risk and the human impact.

2. How long has your business been running, and how long have you worked there?

After working with other law firms in Cairns and as an in-house lawyer for the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, I decided to open my own firm in 2020. We began right at the start of COVID, but this was an opportunity for us to assist Cairns businesses to weather the pandemic. Although it has been tough, particularly for small businesses, working with our clients to find innovative solutions to avoid losing staff has been exciting.

3. How long have you called Cairns home?

I’m a true Cairns local – born and bred in Cairns!

4. What was your first-ever job?

Stacking groceries and working the checkouts with the team at Piccones IGA Edmonton.

5. What is one piece of advice you would give to new business owners?

Take the time to get it right from the start. In employment law, there are many issues that can arise from the minute you employ your first team member. Having proper employment contracts, policies, and procedures in place from the outset can save you many headaches down the track.

6. What has been the best memory in your business to date?

Although there are many memorable moments in the early years of business, my best memory is a recent event. We were preparing a tender for our business and reached out to some of our clients seeking to use them as references for our services. The responses we received, and the reference letters that were written, were humbling and made our team proud of our accomplishments and services to date. It’s moments like that keep you both grounded and inspired in business.

7. Where would you like to see your business in three years?

We want to continue to develop the business to be a business partner for our clients. We know there is value in having someone by your side in business to manage workplace issues, be a sounding board for business decisions, and provide up-to-date training and knowledge. While we still have room to grow, the next three years will also see us developing solid relationships with our clients, offering more fixed-price solutions, and becoming trusted business advisors. Our vision for the future is to offer a service that not only provides legal advice when you need it but is a collaborator with businesses to enable them to thrive.
