5 minutes with Dr Kristian Sørensen, specialist plastic surgeon and owner of FNQ Plastic Surgery

  1. What service does your business provide?

At FNQ Plastic Surgery, we aim to provide a comprehensive Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic surgery service to Far North Queensland, including non-surgical and surgical solutions to patients. Our aim is to provide patients with tailored solutions to their individual problems and help them make the best decisions.

2. How long has your business been running and how long have you worked there?

I have been working in FNQ Plastic Surgery since October 2020, in addition to my role as a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon in the Cairns Hospital public Plastic Surgery service. I have been doing that job since February 2018. We have been working out of our custom-designed rooms in Sheridan Street since January 2022.

3. How long have you lived in Cairns?

My family and I arrived in Australia in February 2018, and we have lived in Cairns ever since.

4. Where is your favourite place to relax in Far North Queensland?

Palm Cove is a wonderful place to relax by walking on the beach and simply enjoying the scenery. It was one of the first places we went to after we had arrived in Cairns, and it has never failed to be tranquil and a place to simply enjoy.

5. What is your favourite quote?

Hahaha!! I have a favourite saying, but I won’t state it here (too rude). It was passed down to me by my surgical boss, and I have taken it to heart and made sure all my trainees learn it.

The quote that I might identify the easiest with is by Dr Seuss. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose”. I suppose it strikes a chord with me as I had moved several times and have specialist qualifications in three countries, none of which was planned when I embarked on my career. I hope my children will take the quote to heart on their journey in life.

6. Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you as a professional?

Mr Maniram Ragbir is a Consultant, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK.

He is a great surgeon, a humble man with a remarkable ability to work across surgical specialities for the good of patients. I learned a lot from his approach to surgery and teaching during my training in the UK. I was very fortunate to have him visit me in Cairns in 2019 when he was on holiday.

7. How do you keep yourself/team motivated?

I try to ensure that every team member has their area of responsibility and that they are involved in decision-making in evolving the business. We all try to enjoy each other’s successes. I try to ensure that they have a chance to educate themselves and improve through course participation.

8. What do you are the most important attributes of a successful leaders today?

I think honesty and integrity will always be defining features of any leader.

9. What are your current business goals?

To provide high-quality advice and treatments to every patient that comes to us and to grow the business for the FNQ population based on those ideals.
