ADF steps in to help

THE Australian Defence Force (ADF) has been providing support to Queensland emergency services and flood-affected North Queensland communities following Ex Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

Since 17 December, personnel from HMAS Cairns and 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment have been providing local emergency assistance, with Queensland emergency services personnel.

Following a request from Queensland Police Service, via the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Defence will work with Queensland emergency authorities on a range of objectives.

“These include assisting the Queensland Government to transport up to 150 emergency service personnel plus equipment, via helicopter, to Cairns,” a Defence spokesperson said.

“Provide helicopter support in the Cairns region to provide immediate safety of life assistance to isolated residents as directed by emergency authorities.

“This includes deploying two Australian Army CH-47F Chinooks and two AW-139 helicopters from Townsville, in support of Queensland emergency authorities.”

The deployed helicopters to the Cairns region will support the emergency evacuation and resupply of isolated communities as directed by emergency authorities.
