30 Years – Jute Theatre
JUTE was a creative explosion that happened when three theatre-makers, Susan Prince, Kathryn Ash and Sullen Maunder, met and started to make theatre together. All three had day jobs but were driven to make good quality theatre. Numerous memorable moments will be forever cherished by the three.
“Our first major grant, the first time we produced a play that the company had developed, the day we were advised that State Government had approved the $2.7 million capital works grant to build a theatre and gallery for JUTE and KickArts (now called North Site) that became the Centre of Contemporary Arts and has since been upgraded and now named Bulmba-ja Arts Centre,” founding member Sullen Maunder said. Over the past 30 years, Sullen commented it all came down to loving what you do, integrity and having the right team behind you.
