Cairns airport reopens

THANKS to the incredible efforts of its staff, the Cairns Airport has reopened today as flights begin to arrive and depart from the recently underwater runway.

For the first time in history, flood waters came over the top of the levy at the airport as they rose to record levels.

Cairns Airport chief executive Richard Barker said it is nothing short of remarkable that the airport is able to return to business as usual so quickly.

“When our team surveyed the runway on Sunday evening, I had no expectation that we would be where we are today,” he said.

“We are thrilled to see passengers arriving and departing, particularly as we approach the festive season and make plans to see our loved ones.”

The Cairns Airport team, along with many external businesses, put in a mammoth effort yesterday to pump water out, clear the runway and inspect its lighting and infrastructure.

“I am very proud of their efforts to come together and deliver for our community, with safety as the highest priority at all times,” Mr Barker said.

While the airport has reopened, Mr Barker said airlines continue to determine their own flight operations and schedules.

“Please contact your airline directly for information about specific flights,” he said.

“I wish to thank customers for their patience and also commend our airline partners for their commitment to restoring services to our region as soon as possible.

“Cairns Airport will be busy this week as we return to normal operations and do our very best to get people to their destinations for the festive season.”

People are asked to be patient and to arrive early before their planned flight, ideally two hours before a domestic service and three hours if you’re travelling internationally.
