LAST Wednesday night saw five students from Far North Queensland acknowledged for their achievement of being selected to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) program in January 2024.
The students selected were:
- Sarah Bui (Cairns State High School)
- Ila Caruana (Cairns State High School)
- Bartholomew Cheng (Cairns State High School)
- Jordanna Giacometti (Mareeba State High School)
- Zali Schwarz (St Monica’s College, Cairns)
- Annelise Lay (St Mary’s Catholic College)
Founded in 1984, the Rotary movement in Australia, as the founding partner, have been instrumental in encouraging academically high achieving science and engineering students to travel to Canberra in January each year to attend a Science Summer School (now NYSF).
Students are selected from Grade 11 by Rotary Clubs to attend the NYSF program at Australian National University (and recently at University of Queensland) in the January of their final year at school.
The program is designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in these fields.
Six students from Far North Queensland have been selected to attend the NYSF nine-day program at ANU or UQ in January 2024.
The students stay at university colleges and are immersed in science and technology, and have the opportunity to:
- participate in tours of science and technology facilities
- learn about cutting-edge research,
- engage with industry partners and research providers,
- learn about university, training and STEM career pathways
- mix with other like-minded students from all over Australia
- participate in social and team-building activities
- network with former NYSF participants
The Rotary Clubs in Far North Queensland have assisted by promoting the opportunity in local schools, managing applications and interview selections of students and assisting with providing financial support to allow the students to attend.
