CAIRNS Police have charged a man following an incident at Edge Hill on Thursday, March 28, where an emergency declaration was made following reports of a shot fired.
Emergency services responded after reports a man allegedly was shot on Collins Avenue at 1 pm.
It will be alleged two vehicles collided and one person discharged a firearm at another person before leaving on foot.
An emergency situation was declared just before 2 pm and a large exclusion zone was set up around Edge Hill, with boundaries encompassing Pease Street, Woodward Street, Polentz Street, and Russell Street.
Members of the public were advised at the time to avoid the areas of exclusion while police responded, and residents were asked to stay inside with their doors and windows locked.
Edge Hill State School went into lockdown, but parents were able to pick their children up via Pease Street.
The emergency declaration was revoked around 3.45 pm on Thursday.
Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham said despite speaking to a witness about the incident, the circumstances regarding a potential gunshot victim were “unusual”.
“This is an unusual one where we think someone has been wounded and they haven’t stuck around,” he said.
A 43-year-old man was located later that day with a non-life-threatening single gunshot wound to the leg.
A 35-year-old Varsity Lakes man has been charged with acts intended to maim, disfigure, or disable and contravene an order about information necessary to access information stored electronically.
He is expected to appear before the Townsville Magistrates Court on April 1.
