Council supports Shadows from the Past

THE popular Shadows from the Past event hosted by the Cairns & District Family History Society Inc (CDFHS) is set to continue into the future after Cairns Regional Council pledged $37,500 over the next three years in support.

The CDFHS is a not-for-profit organisation that plays a pivotal role in promoting family history and genealogical research in Cairns and its surrounding areas.

Shadows from the Past is one of their flagship initiatives and has been captivating audiences since its inception in 2014.

The Shadows from the Past program offers dramatised walks through the historic McLeod Street Pioneer Cemetery, providing a unique and immersive experience for attendees.

This initiative not only entertains but also serves as a means to revitalise and promote the rich heritage of this significant Queensland-listed asset.

Each year, the society collaborates with professional writers and directors to develop compelling narratives about the pioneers buried in the cemetery.

These stories offer insight into the lives and legacies of individuals who have played a significant role in shaping the local community.

“Since 2016, council has been a steadfast supporter of the Shadows from the Past production, providing financial assistance to ensure its continued success,” a council spokesperson said.

“As part of this ongoing commitment, council will allocate $12,500 annually over the next three years to support the CDFHS in their endeavour to preserve and share Cairns’ historical heritage.

“The Shadows from the Past program has become a beloved fixture in the Cairns community, attracting enthusiastic participation and garnering widespread acclaim.”
