Mental health and wellbeing at CQU

CQUniversity has launched the second iteration of its Mental Health and Wellbeing Plan, Mindwaves 2.0.

Officially released on 7 May, on the 11th annual Australian and New Zealand University Mental Health Day (UMHD), the University’s new Mental Health and Wellbeing Plan 2024-2028 builds upon the achievements of the previous strategy.

CQUniversity’s Vice-President of Student Success Professor Jonathan Powles said the new plan will build upon our existing achievements to ensure a sustainable, coordinated and collaborative response to student and staff mental health and wellbeing needs.

“Initially launched in 2020, the Mindwaves vision is to actively support the mental health and social and emotional wellbeing of the University’s students and staff, while also engaging with the broader community to advocate and promote an inclusive, resilient and supportive society,” Professor Powles said.

“It has been so valuable to have the plan co-produced with the input, expertise and collaboration of many students and staff across the University.”

CQUniversity Chief Wellbeing Officer Dr Bethany Mackay, who was instrumental in the project, said the plan highlights the need for responsive support when students and staff need it the most, and to take a preventative and positive organisation-wide approach to create a flourishing culture and university community.

“The plan prompts us to continue fostering opportunities for authentic connection, creating an environment where people have a sense of belonging; where the remarkable qualities, individuality and strengths of each person are recognised and celebrated,” Dr Mackay said.

CQUniversity will host events across its campus footprint to celebrate the launch of Mindwaves 2.0 and commemorate UMHD.

The launch event will be hosted by CQU’s Student Success Division alongside People and Culture, with special guests including Chancellor Graeme Innes AM and Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Nick Klomp.
