THE popular Douglas Christmas Street Party, scheduled for this Friday, has been cancelled due to Tropical Cyclone Jasper and subsequent heavy rains forecast.
Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the cancellation was disappointing but the safety of the community is council’s priority.
“It’s shaping up to be a challenging week ahead for everyone so by cancelling the party we hope you are able to prepare for the conditions and focus on yourself, family and friends,” Mayor Kerr said.
“I’d also like to thank the volunteers, community groups, stall holders and the Douglas Chamber of Commerce for their efforts to put on the event.
“I know it would have been a success and should return again next year.
“At this stage the Douglas Shire Christmas Carols are going ahead so hopefully we can come together on Saturday night to share some festive spirit.”
