Festival of Spirits returns

GET into the spirit of things as Hemingway’s Brewery’s annual Festival of Spirits returns from noon on Saturday 6 July.

From the skirl of bagpipes to the rhythm and drums of African samba, a lively and vibrant lineup of music will play host to a spectacular showcase of tipples distilled at home and abroad.

Festival goers who fancy a tipple of hand-crafted spirits, be they different-flavoured gins, whiskeys, vodka, tequila, rum, or cane spirit, are in for a treat with a locally made showcase from five Far Northern distillers to taste and compare alongside a curated selection of international flavours.

Hemingway’s Head of Hospitality Roman Haslinger said they are doing things a little bit differently at this year’s Festival of Spirits by swapping the pop-up bar concept for an installation of four ‘spirit’ bars specialising in the differing styles of liquor with fun theming: a Gin and Whiskey Bar, a Tiki Bar (rum), a Party Bar (vodka and tequila), and a Cocktail Bar (six cocktails).

According to Mr Haslinger, each bar will offer two alternate tasting paddles of three 15mL spirits, with the option to enjoy them neat or with various mixers.

The spirit bars are as follows:

  • Gin & Whisky Bar: Discover the rich depth of gin and whisky at the venue’s heart.
  • Tiki Bar: Dive into tropical vibes with our exquisite rum selections.
  • Party Bar: Get the celebration started with tequila and vodka.
  • Cocktail Bar: Indulge in six irresistible cocktails, including two refreshing options from our slushy machine.

Local spirits on show include a tropical, Carnivale-style collection from Devils Thumb with their pineapple and spiced rums, cane spirit, rainforest gin, signature dry gin, and vodka, dry gin from Distil on the Hill, iridium dark rum, Mr Watkins whisky, a selection of agave spirits from Mt Uncle Distillery, Davidson Plum gin from Wolf Lane Distillery, and a single malt whisky from Wild River Distillery.

Festival goers will also be treated to a vibrant, musical atmosphere as they sip and savour with live performances in an eclectic entertainment lineup keeping the energy high and non-stop:

  • Highland & Irish Dancers: Experience traditional dances performed by the City of Cairns Highland & Irish dancers, captivating audiences of all ages.
  • Chris Adams (The Roaming Bagpiper): Enjoy the enchanting sounds of Chris Adams and his Scottish bagpipes.
  • Jazzuleles: Delight in the roaming melodies of the Jazzuleles, Australia’s award-winning ukulele ensemble.
  • Sambalicious: Feel the rhythm with Brazilian and African drums, as the Brazilian Samba dancers electrify the stage with their performances.
  • Nightshift (Dany Bani + Band): Grooving from 12 pm – 3 pm.
  • DJ Tommy: Spinning tropical house and Latin beats from 3 pm– 9 pm.

Festival of Spirits is a free and family-friendly event on Saturday, 6 July 2024, from noon until late at Hemingway’s Brewery, Wharf Street, Cairns.
