Fishing to continue along Cairns Esplanade

ANGLERS can continue to drop a line and enjoy fishing along the Cairns Esplanade following a review of Cairns Regional Council’s Local Laws.

Council has endorsed amendments to 12 of its Local Laws and added a new Local Law specifically in relation to waste management.

These additions and amendments followed a public consultation period and State Interest Check from 16 August to 13 September.

Fishing will be permitted 24-hours a day along most of the Esplanade, except along the footpath fronting the Lagoon, between the northern and eastern piers, which will not be permitted between 6am and 6pm.

Acting Mayor Terry James said council had received 104 submissions in relation to proposed amendments to its Local Laws, the vast majority relating to fishing on the Cairns Esplanade.

“There was clear and overwhelming support for fishing to be allowed to continue on the Esplanade,” Cr James said.

“During the four-week consultation period, council received a total of 93 submissions on a proposed prohibition of fishing on the Cairns Esplanade, with only one submission supporting the ban.

“Having considered the feedback, fishing on the Cairns Esplanade is permitted, with the addition of a time restriction along the front of the Lagoon striking a balance between safety for Lagoon users and community expectations.”

Other amendments to Local Laws endorsed by council included changes relating to animal management, feeding wildlife, the removal of unregistered vehicles from public areas, pest species, and the process for holding events.

The amended Local Laws come into effect 1 July 2024.
