Kids cook up storm at PCYC Mornington Island

MORNINGTON Island kids have been busy cooking up a storm and painting the next Picasso-inspired masterpiece at PCYC Mornington Island during after-school drop-in sessions.

Acting Sergeant and Youth Club Manager Mira Al-Tamimi says it has been a joy to watch the kids create and bake their own sweet treats.

When lamingtons were on the menu, Acting Sergeant Al-Tamimi was thrilled to see the boys were just as eager to get involved when he asked who wanted to bake.

“In a heartbeat, the kitchen was filled with a contagious energy as a group of enthusiastic boys eagerly stepped forward,” she said.

“It didn’t matter what we were baking, or the intricacies involved.

“All that mattered was the chance to create something delicious together.”

During art sessions, the kids are encouraged to explore different mediums and express themselves freely, and the only guidance they are given is around painting techniques.

Acting Sergeant Al-Tamimi says art is one of the best expressions of creativity.

“Being able to create environments where these young individuals can learn from each other and grow together has been a truly humbling experience,” she said.

“The Academy didn’t prepare me for the special moments I would have on Mornington Island.

“Surrounded by a group of talented kids, I found myself engaging in art with them, capturing the significant moments of their growth and development through the lens of my camera.

“I feel incredibly blessed to be on this PCYC journey, witnessing the power of art and community in shaping lives.

“It’s moments like these that remind me of the immense privilege and responsibility that comes with being a police officer.”

It is not just a chance to take part fun activities, the children are also growing in confidence and teamwork skills.

From baking and cooking to painting and crafting, these after-school classes have created a safe place for creativity and self-discovery.
