Les Misérables ends a sold-out season

AFTER a sell-out season enjoyed by more than 8,000 people across 10 performances, the Cairns Choral Society will bring its 2024 production of Les Misérables to a close this weekend.

Cairns Choral Society’s Director of Les Misérables, Venera Walsh, said they had received news on Friday that the final three shows were sold out.

“With full houses for both opening and closing weekends and in between, we are over the moon and grateful to the people of Cairns and Far North Queensland for stepping up and showing out,” she said.

“For our cast of 63 performers and 16-strong orchestra, it is so wonderful to have this support from our community.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response, and to receive standing ovations night after night is so humbling and a validation for all the hard work, long hours, and talent.  I am so, so proud.”

The 2024 season of Les Misérables is the fourth production of the world-famous musical in 30 years.

Cairns Choral Society presented the first amateur production in 1993 and was the first company in the southern hemisphere to do so.

For Mrs Walsh, who played Madame Thénardier in the 2003 production, directing this show is a wonderful honour and privilege.

The Cairns Choral Society acknowledges the generous support of Cairns Regional Council, Gold Sponsor Babinda Electrics, and Silver Sponsors. Murray & Lyon’s Solicitors, Newart, Piccone’s and The Woodward Family CaPTA Groupplus Bronze Sponsors FNQ Dance Academy, All Construction Approvals, i-LEC Intelligent Electrical & Civil Solutions, Turning Pointe Dance Studios and Maven Dental.

Les Misérables performs its final shows tonight Saturday, 27 January at 2 pm and 7.30 pm at Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC).

  1. It was an amazing performance & my 11 yo grand-daughter loved it too, despite it being a bit sad. This was my third time of seeing this show in Cairns & I still loved it – & had tears in my eyes at the end! Then I had to return home to Adelaide. Thanks sincerely to everyone involved. Just brilliant!
