Successful search and rescue, Mareeba

AFTER successfully locating a lost hiker, police want to remind anyone bush walking or planning a trip to prepare and be safe when venturing out in the region.

The advice is to make sure you carry plenty of water, tell someone where you are going and what time you are expected back, ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and carry a personal locator beacon.

Police and State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers launched a search and rescue for a lost hiker on Wednesday evening (November 22).

The 23-year-old Douglas woman had been trekking to the top of Mount Lambs Head, Mareeba on Wednesday.

Around 6.30pm the woman raised the alarm using what coverage she could get on her mobile phone. She stated that she was unable to descend the mountain due to the inclement weather conditions and declining daylight.

SES and police ascended the mountain and located the woman around midnight, she was safely brought down from the mountain.

For anyone who enjoys a good bush walk, many of the mountains and tracks around the Far North would be on your list of walks to do.

Before you leave for your trek, there are a couple of safety things you need to do:

Ensure you are aware of the difficulty of the track you plan on completing. Some of the mountains in the area are rated difficult by the Department of Environment and science

  • Let someone who is not going on the walk know where you are going, your departure time and return time
  • Carry suitable food and plenty of water for the duration of the trip
  • Ensure your mobile phone is charged
  • A personal locator beacon is a good alternative when phone reception is poor
  • Carry a small first aid kit
  • Wear suitable clothing for the planned hike
