Cairns salon bolstered by community after burglary

HANNA SLOAN

THE owner of Luna Beauty Co., who was left devastated after her salon was broken into and $15,000 worth of supplies and equipment were stolen, has seen a surge of community support.

Tarryn Wedel was woken at 6:30am On Tuesday, 21 November by a phone call from a neighbouring business owner telling her that her Cairns North salon had been burgled.

The thief, seen on the neighbouring Poemphun Thai restaurant’s security cameras, broke in via a neighbouring tenancy’s window in the building and accessed Luna Beauty Co. through a shared interior door at the back of the salon.

Ms Wedel is thankful that her salon was not vandalised, but $15,000 worth of the contents were stolen, including a phone, iPad, speakers, cash, retail beauty products, brushes, nail art supplies sourced internationally, and the salon’s entire collection of gel polishes, valued at $5,000 on their own.

Ms Wedel was devastated to have lost so much product right before the busiest time of the year.

“Some of our nail art supplies and glitters were sourced from all over the world and were irreplaceable,” she said.

“This salon is something I put years into creating and developing, working tirelessly to grow a business I was so proud of.

“In one night, one person was able to take away my proudest accomplishment.”

Ms Wedel said it felt like her salon space had been violated and that although the thief has since been apprehended, Luna Beauty Co.’s financial burden remains sorely felt.

However, the burden has been slightly lessened through the generosity of other Cairns businesses and  locals.

Ms Wedel decided to host a fundraising evening on Saturday, December 2, to let her clients know she was not going anywhere, and to turn the evening into a celebration.

Multiple local businesses offered support, providing vouchers and gifts for the “mystery tree” set up in the salon for the Christmas period, a lucky dip of sorts where customers can purchase envelopes valued between $10-$150 and open them to reveal donated items.

“I cried far more happy tears than sad during the past few weeks,” Ms Wedel said.

“The kindness and generosity of our clients, community members, local business owners & businesses across Australia was absolutely mind-blowing.

“The event gained a lot of traction on social media, with businesses jumping on board to help out, providing vouchers & gifts for our ‘mystery tree.’

Over 50 people attended the event in support of rebuilding Luna Beauty Co.’s supplies, and some businesses and individuals who couldn’t make it but wanted to help made donations online.

“We managed to raise enough money to replace our nail supplies to have us back up and running on all nail services – which accounts for over 80 per cent of our treatments each week,” Ms Wedel said.

The young entrepreneur is in disbelief and feels grateful and humbled by the groundswell of support for her salon.

“To be hit right before Christmas was not what we expected at all, and will remain one of the worst days of my life, but in the same breath, I experienced my own little Christmas miracle to find myself surrounded by so much positivity and support from so many people who felt touched by our story,” she said.

Businesses who pitched in to help Luna Beauty Co. get back on their feet include Minty Co., Sheena’s Nautical Knots, Annee’s Caphe, Wild Butterfly, Yum Sing Restaurant, R&M Therapy, Allskyn, Blondelicious, Cairns Hair Beauty Massage Supplies, KD Cosmetic Tattoos, Boho Leni, Spirit of Cairns, Makeup by Erin W, Allure Cosmetics, Dundees Restaurant, Guerilla Cairns, NOA, Frankland Islands, and COVE Sunglasses in Melbourne.
