Cairns comedians to honour Maddi Sivyer with Mad For Life

LOCAL comedians are coming together to honour the life of a much-loved member of the Cairns comedy scene at the Mad For Life Comedy Night at Macalister Brewing Company this weekend.

Maddi Sivyer was a local psychologist, comedian, martial artist, and drag king who suffered her whole life from cystic fibrosis and related complications, including liver disease.

At ten years old Maddi was given six months to live, began planning her own funeral, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted her wish to meet Lady Gaga.

Then at 11, Maddi was given the greatest gift of all – a liver transplant that saved her life.

Growing up, Maddi became an advocate for organ and tissue donation and having discussions with family members about wishing to be a donor, and strongly encouraged all who are able to register as organ donors on the Donate Life website.

Maddi obtained a bachelor’s degree and was a psychologist pursuing post-graduate qualifications in addition to her creative pursuits.

Sadly, in January 2024, 14 years after her first transplant surgery, Maddi succumbed to her liver disease while waiting for another organ donation.

The local comedy community has decided to host an event in her honour this Saturday, 13 April, with all ticket proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Event organiser SJ Peake said Maddi was much-loved and that she is dearly missed, with mourners from all over the country attending her funeral in January.

“At Maddi’s funeral her trainer, Paul from Cairns Martial Arts Academy, challenged us to have the black-belt mentality Maddi did and he said we should ask ourselves at every point, especially when life gets hard, ‘What would Maddi do?’” Ms Peake said.

“‘We think that Maddi would want us to come together and remember her again, and we’ll also do what we do best, which is make inappropriate jokes and laugh through the tears.

“That’s what Maddi did, and that’s why she was one of us.”

The Mad For Life Comedy Night will be held at Macalister Brewing Company on Saturday 13 April from 8-10pm.

As well as ticket proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, there will be raffles to win and merchandise available to order, exclusively designed for the night by local artist Jessica Lynn.

“We have 10 really funny top-notch comedians coming along,” Ms Peake said.

“Tickets are over 70 per cent sold and we fully expect it to be a sell-out event, so I encourage people to get in quickly so they don’t miss out.

“We are aiming raise $5000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and we also have a goal to have everyone at the show register as an organ donor by the time they leave.

“We want this to become an annual event where we gather for some laughs and to remember our friend Maddi.”

For those who wish to support the cause but cannot attend, donations are gratefully accepted at the Make-A-Wish Mad For Life fundraising page.

Mad For Life Comedy Night tickets are still available and Mad For Life merchandise is available to purchase online.
