Man charged with rape and serious assault

CAIRNS detectives have charged a 53-year-old Manunda man following investigations into the alleged sexual assault of a woman at a Cairns North residence on 24 November.

The 53-year-old man was known to the woman and police believe he was invited to stay at her unit.

The woman woke during the night to find she was being allegedly sexually assaulted by the man and as she attempted to break free, he forcefully grabbed her with both hands on her jaw.

The woman managed to break free from the 53-year-old man and locked him out of her unit and contacted police. The woman required medical treatment for a dislocated jaw.

Detectives located the man at a Manunda residence around 2pm yesterday, 28 November.

He was arrested and later charged with rape and assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was refused police bail and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
