Connect during Seniors’ Month

TABLELANDS Regional Council is celebrating Seniors’ Month with a free Ageing Well Expo and a host of other regional events during October.

The expo runs from 9.30am-12pm on Tuesday 24 October at Merriland Hall in Atherton and gives people a chance to come together, connect and learn from experts on planning for ageing well including legal advice, health services, and volunteer and recreation organisations.

There will be free health checks on offer, exercise demonstrations, opportunities to join a club, and free light refreshments.

Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew said this year’s Seniors’ Month is shaping up to be the biggest one yet.

“We are hosting the expo, Seniors on the Road information sessions, ageing well forums, library activities and a special disaster preparedness event,” he said.

Council is also seeking expressions of interest (EOIs) for exhibitors and demonstrators to present at the expo.

If you provide a service or offer activities to older community members you can submit an EOI here until Friday 13 October.

“Once again, we are partnering with Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Police Service to host free Seniors on the Road information sessions,” Cr Cardew said.

The Monday 16 October session is already fully booked but there’s still time to book online or call 1300 362 242 for the second session at 10am–12noon Friday 20 October at the Coordination Centre, 15 Vernon Street, Atherton.

A special disaster preparedness event, Seniors Safety Squad, is also being held at the Coordination Centre in Atherton 9.30am–2.30pm Tuesday 10 October.

Participants will gain knowledge to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural hazards and disasters through fun interactive activities.

Bookings are open for this free event and you can reserve your spot here until Friday 6 October.

“We are also holding a series of free ageing well forums during Seniors’ Month with a panel of experts discussing topics including advanced care planning and directives, enduring power of attorney, My Aged Care and writing a will,” Cr Cardew said.

“Come along for a cuppa and a chat and pick up some resources at the same time.”

You can register to attend a forum until Friday 6 October, with five taking place across the region in Yungaburra, Malanda, Ravenshoe, Herberton and Atherton.
