Puppy thief charged with animal cruelty

One of the thieves that stole four Golden Retriever puppies from an Edmonton home has been charged with animal cruelty after he neglected to properly care for the animal.

The 16-year-old, in company of others who have since been charged, forced their way into the home on 15 December and stole the two-week old puppies, jewellery and a Mazda coupe.

The puppies and the remaining stolen property has since been recovered with the puppies turning up in four different homes in Cairns’ south.

One of the stolen puppies was located hidden on the floor behind a bed in the corner of an Edmonton home.

Police believe the puppy was prematurely removed from its home and the thief neglected to provide adequate food, water and proper shelter.

The 16-year-old boy was charged with animal cruelty, unlawful possession of stolen property and five counts of breaching a bail condition.

He was refused police bail and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court at a later date.
