TRC reading challenge begins

SUMMER is a great time for immersing yourself in a good book especially as Tableland Regional Council’s (TRC) Summer Reading Challenge begins.

This free program is a fun way to keep everyone reading over the holiday period and it’s not just for kids.

TRC Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew believes reading over summer helps kids maintain the skills they have been learning during the school year.

“Reading stimulates kids’ imagination, expands their understanding of the world and helps them develop language skills,” he said.

“Kids up to 17 years old can join the challenge by stopping into one of our libraries to pick up an activity pack and book log.

“For every five books they read they’ll receive a small prize.”

Children who see adults read are more likely to read themselves, and adults taking part in the challenge need to read at least five books for a chance to win a $50 gift card.

“When we say books, we just don’t mean the paper ones either,” Cr Cardew said.

“Books include audiobooks, ebooks, comics, etc.”

Adults can submit their booklist online and the challenge runs until Wednesday 31 January.
