THOUSANDS of young people will get a taste of democracy when they head to the ballot box soon for the inaugural Cairns Youth Council election.
Young people aged 11-17 are eligible to vote for the candidates running in the region they live or spend the most time in.
Voters will head to local high schools and community spaces to elect 12 representatives from 18 candidates to the Cairns Youth Council, which will be split into four regions (North, Central, South and Far South).

The Youth Council will serve an 18 month term in office from February 2024 to July 2025, during which time they will deliver projects, campaigns and events based on a priority agenda developed early in the term.
