Young assaulter arrested

POLICE have charged an 18-year-old Whitfield man with assault after he repeatedly punched someone in the head after demanding cigarettes.

The incident took place at around 5.30pm on 1 February, before he was eventually arrested yesterday morning 4 February.

The victim made his way home where a neighbour noticed he looked unwell and called an ambulance. The victim was transferred to Cairns Hospital for further treatment.

Shortly after the alleged assault the 18-year-old made his way to a nearby carpark where he allegedly opened a car door and attempted to enter the vehicle before the occupants pulled the door shut.

The 18-year-old was also allegedly involved in a theft from a motor vehicle on 17 September last year.

He has been charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, unlawful entry of vehicle and unlawful entry of premises.

He was refused bail and appeared before Cairns Magistrates Court today.
